When talking about the most beautiful roads in Switzerland, the Col du Grimsel almost always appears among the first names mentioned. Connecting the cantons of Bern and Valais, it reaches an altitude of 2,164 metres and impresses with its rocky landscapes, turquoise lakes and perfectly maintained road.

Often combined with the Furka and Susten passes, the Grimsel is a must for motorcycle enthusiasts. Whether you are discovering the Swiss Alps for the first time or you are already familiar with mountain roads, this pass deserves a special place in your itinerary.

Why is the Grimsel so popular among motorcyclists?

Unlike some highly technical mountain passes, the Grimsel offers a smooth riding experience, with wide curves, excellent visibility and a generally outstanding road surface.

But what truly makes its reputation are the landscapes.

Within just a few kilometres, you go from green forests to an almost lunar environment, where granite rocks overlook artificial lakes with an intense blue colour.

Every stop makes you want to take out your camera.

The ascent from Gletsch

Leaving Gletsch, the climb begins immediately.

The first corners already offer breathtaking views over the valley and, on a clear day, towards the nearby Furka Pass.

The road quickly gains altitude.

The hairpins are regular, the roadway is wide and the grip inspires confidence.

Even riders with limited mountain experience can fully enjoy this ascent by taking their time and riding at their own pace.

The Grimsel reservoirs and lakes

The Grimsel is also famous for its impressive hydroelectric facilities.

The Grimselsee, Räterichsbodensee and the surrounding dams create a unique landscape in Switzerland.

The water sometimes takes on a spectacular turquoise colour thanks to the glacial particles suspended in it.

These lakes are perfect places to take a break, admire the scenery and capture some unforgettable photos.

The summit

A parking area allows you to fully enjoy the view.

On a clear day, the panorama is simply exceptional.

The enormous concrete walls contrast with the surrounding mountains, creating an almost unreal landscape.

Take your time: the Grimsel is meant to be enjoyed both from the saddle and during your stops.

What is the best time to ride the Grimsel ?

The Grimsel is generally open from June to October.

June

Snow patches can still be found along the roadside.

The landscapes are spectacular.

July – August

Weather conditions are often ideal, but traffic increases, especially during weekends.

September

Temperatures remain pleasant and traffic decreases.

For many riders, this is the perfect compromise.

Is the Grimsel difficult ?

Not really.

The corners are easy to read, the road is wide and the surface is excellent.

However, as with all Alpine passes, you should remain attentive to:

• cyclists;

• camper vans;

• rapidly changing weather conditions;

• animals crossing the road.

Can the Grimsel be combined with other passes ?

Absolutely.

This is even one of its greatest advantages.
